Growing up I always had a faith, but it was an unclear faith. I don’t really have that one date or story that I would consider to be my testimony, but I do remember the change. When I was younger, one of my best friends and I were talking and he asked me, ‘What do you think happens when we die? Is it just black? Is it nothing? What do you think?’ I started to think about it and I got this pit of worry in my stomach. I told him, ‘Oh don’t worry, God will take care of us.’

But deep down it really scared me. I would try to put it out of my mind, but whenever I would think about it, this empty feeling in my stomach would come back.

This feeling of fear was there for some time until I went to my dad and asked him for help. He said to me ‘Why don’t you ask Jesus to come into your life, forgive your sins, and take that feeling away? If He doesn’t, then you haven’t lost anything, but if He does, look at what you’ve gained.’ So that’s what I did and to this day, that feeling in my stomach hasn’t come back.

Every day I realize how blessed I’ve been in my life. From the time I was 7 years old, I wanted to play in the NHL, and to this day it’s awesome, it’s fun, and I realize that it’s not going to last forever.

Bryan Clay: Track
Olympic Medalist

  • Gold medalist, Decathlon, 2004, 2008 Olympics
  • Gold medalist, Heptathlon, World Indoor Championships, 2008
  • Gold medalist, Decathlon, World Championships, 2005

My support system and my faith have been the main factors to my success.

A huge reason why I haven't been tempted to take drugs or do anything of that sort is because I realize that winning is not my life, it's not my identity. I know that God has me doing what I'm doing. I know that yes I can win. I also know that I'm not going to win all the time and I know that either way, win or lose, that God is going to provide for me.

What I want young people today to know is that you can do and be anything you want with the proper priorities and balance. Physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual balance along with the proper priorities allow you to be the best "you"!

I worked so hard growing up in Korea. I practiced from 5:30 in the morning to 10 at night. I took the same spot on the range every time. There wasn't much grass left--just mud and brush. One driving range was only 70 yards long. You hit into big curtains. To play, we would get up at three in the morning and drive three hours to the course. One day, I played 71 holes.

The best part about America is if you dream something, you can achieve it. After [the 1997 World Cup], I went into the press room and said, "I am going to America!" I spoke no English. But I was going to do it.

My definition of success is simple: effort. Effort equals success. I'm very fortunate--making a living, helping my family. When I look at my three kids it gives me a sense that every stroke I play is very important.

The best advice I ever got came from my father's friend: Be humble and respectful.
